The Impact of the Pandemic for Medical Appraisal

The Impact of the Pandemic for Medical Appraisal

Chair: Dr Christiane Shrimpton (NES Associate Postgraduate Dean for Appraisal and Revalidation)
Panel: Brigid Russell (Coach and Leadership Consultant )
Panel: Emma Murphy (NHS Dumfries & Galloway - Patient Feedback Manager)

The last two years have been challenging for everyone in many ways. Appraisal was halted for several months and when it re-started the impact of everything that has happened on doctors became a more prominent part of appraisals. There have been regular discussions about taking a wellbeing approach to appraisals with little clarity what that means and how (and if) it should be done. Some appraisees find it intrusive to be asked about their wellbeing directly. The longer the relentless pressure has carried on the more conflict situations have arisen – both in relationships with patients and within teams. Appraisers have been going through challenging times in the same way the doctors they appraise have and can find it difficult to discuss situations that remind them of things that have affected them.

Making the Space for Listening
Brigid Russell, Coach and Leadership Consultant

We are all holding so much, personally and professionally, as we continue to live and work through the pandemic. There is a feeling of exhaustion which extends well beyond physical tiredness, and no wonder. How can we help and support each other to find a way through by listening for longer, listening to understand what is going on, and without feeling the need to jump straight to 'solutions'? When we listen, really listen to each other, the effect can be truly restorative. This session will consider how we can make the space for listening with and for each other

Managing Conflict

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Have considered the impact of challenging situations on others
  • Understand how to apply listening skills to support others
  • Develop an increased awareness and understanding how conflict arises
  • Be aware of de-escalation techniques
  • Have considered how to reflect on conflict situations in a medical appraisal
