Responsible Officers (ROs)

Responsible Officers (ROs)

YOUR APPRAISER IS NOT YOUR RESPONSIBLE OFFICER.

The Responsible Officer (RO) is the individual in each organisation with legal responsibility for the system of revalidation, and is the person who makes the Revalidation recommendations to the GMC.

The ROs are the Executive Medical Directors of NHS Health Boards in Scotland, in most cases. (This process is regulated by the Department of Health in England.)

For Trainees (in Scotland), it is the Medical Director of NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

If you wish to know who your Medical Director / RO is, check with your health board's intranet for details.

if you have a query about your revalidation or wish to contact your RO, please liaise with the local health boards' appraisal admin teams in the first instance, who will escalate your queries accordingly.
