Interested in becoming an Appraiser Course Tutor/Facilitator?

Applications now OPEN.

A high-quality appraisal allows individuals to reflect on achievements, wellbeing, areas of strength and where change and improvement could be made.  It is linked to the GMC’s revalidation process and has been developed to ensure that doctors can demonstrate positively that they remain fit to practise.

The role of the NES Appraiser Course Tutor/Facilitator is to support the training of colleagues so that they are ready and able to take on the appraiser role; ensuring high-level quality appraisals can be delivered consistently throughout all sectors of medicine in Scotland.

We are interviewing interested candidates to join our tutor cohort on 16th February 2026 - if you are interested, application instructions below.

About the role

The tutors/facilitators on the NES Appraiser training programme are all experienced appraisers.  They lead on small and large group discussions and share their experience and best practice hints and tips; and offer feedback to attendees for reflection where applicable.

To be considered for the role, you must be excellent communicators, have completed your medical training and be an active appraiser (for minimum of 2 years).

Allocation to courses is managed by the Medical Appraisal Training Manager.  We will work with tutors’ availability to ensure a fair distribution but for new tutors, we will aim to allocate at least one New Appraiser and one Refresher Appraiser course (more if availability allows).

For full details please download the Role Description & Person Specifications document below.

Unless stated elsewhere, all our training events are run online via MS Teams by default.

Remuneration

Tutors working in secondary care setting must have agreement from employing health board to provide appropriate professional leave in order to take up this role.

For tutors who are either working in primary care setting who are self-employed, or retired from NHS clinical commitments, NES will recompense for backfill and time involved at 1.5 sessional payment per half-day training event.

The tutor role is not a contracted role and as such, there are no employee rights or benefits with NES.  Potential candidates are invited to an interview and if successful, they will join the cohort of appraiser training tutors who we would invite to help us facilitate on the appraiser training programme.

This role is specific to the NES appraiser training programme - if you already have commitments to other NES directorates, it is your responsibility to manage your own time but we would work with your availability (as well as others) to ensure we do not allocate you more courses than you can commit to.

Interview format and preparations

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to review their Form 6 feedback on SOAR ahead of attending the interview.

The rest of the interview will be focussed on your experience as an appraiser and educator.

Successful candidates will then be invited to an induction session (w/c 2nd March) prior to facilitating on their first course.
