Guidance for Trainee users on SOAR

Resources for Doctors in Training (in Scotland)

Since Medical Revalidation was launched in December 2012, NES has developed SOAR to accommodate Appraisal and Revalidation recommendations for all doctors working in NHS Scotland, in Primary and Secondary Care, including Trainee doctors.

It has been agreed at a national level that Revalidation recommendations in Scotland will be made by Responsible Officers (ROs). For Trainee doctors in Scotland, the RO is the Medical Director of NES.

Trainees are asked to complete the Health, Probity, Complaints & Critical Incidents, and Work History declarations on SOAR; and reviewed and signed off by their Educational Supervisors ahead of their review meeting.

This allows the RO and their named and agreed proxies (your Postgraduate Deans) to access your ARCP details (imported from Turas) and declarations, as well as making the Revalidation recommendations from within the same system.

Please find below PowerPoint slideshows that illustrate how various Trainee users navigate through SOAR.

Please also visit the Trainee FAQs page if you have further queries.

Who does what on SOAR?

  • Trainees - need to complete the self-assessment declarations on Health, Probity, Complaints, and Work History.
  • Educational Supervisors - need to review and sign off their Trainees' submitted declarations.
  • TPDs - need to review ARCP and declarations and make suggested "Outcome to Revalidation" to Postgraduate Deans / RO
  • Postgraduate Deans / RO - based on TPDs' suggestion and any other information available to them, make Revalidation recommendation to GMC via SOAR.
  • Deanery Admin teams - maintains Turas to ensure correct information is imported into SOAR; deal with Trainee login requests; create declarations on SOAR for Trainees.  (Please see Admin section for more information)
