Recognition of Trainer – changes to continuing recognition
The GMC has changed the requirements for a trainer’s continued recognition which came into effect from June 1st. This session considered the recent changes and the impact it has to appraisal and appraisers.
Speakers:
- Dr Claire Alexander (NES Associate Dean)
- Professor Lindsay Donaldson (NES Deputy Medical Director)
- Dr Colin Perry (NHS GG&C Director of Medical Education)
|
Key points from session:
- The requirements on how trainers are recognised has not changed;
- Nor has the requirements itself.
- Appraiser and Appraisee will continue to discuss the work involved in the trainer role(s) as part of whole-practice appraisal.
- The changes only apply to a trainer's continued recognition and impacts DMEs (Directors of Medical Education) and EOs (Educational Organisations) only where:
- Trainers will no longer need to be re-recognised every 5 years;
- And as such DMEs will no longer scrutinise the Form 7s but function on SOAR is retained for review as needed;
- And EO role and functionality to be removed.
- For primary care:
- Those who are approved GP trainers are not required to complete the ROT form;
- Only those who have foundation supervision (and not an approved trainer) are required.
- Development work on SOAR to make the necessary changes is taking place in the background, timescale to be confirmed.
- Resources (e.g. training modules, FAQs etc) will be updated in due course.
