Introducing Turas Learn & The Knowledge Network

Since the SOAR changes in January 2025, users have to login via a Turas account.  The Turas platform is designed by NES to be one-stop shop for all health and social care tools and learning resources.  This session introduced two resources that appraisers might not have come across before: Turas Learn, and The Knowledge Network.

Speakers:

  • Gayle Baxter (Senior Specialist Lead, Technology Enhanced Learning; NHS Scotland Academy, Learning and Innovation Directorate)
  • Donna Watson (Knowledge Manager, NES Knowledge Services; NHS Scotland Academy, Learning and Innovation Directorate)

Notes from Q&A:

  • Can you use NHS email/password if NOT on an NHS computer - i.e. working from home? Or do you need OpenAthens registration if so how do I get that for home use?

You can access The Knowledge Network from anywhere with an internet connection. The OpenAthens username and password are the same whether on or off site. Full details on the OpenAthens account section.

  • Will local library offer signposting to local resources for appraisees new to the area?

Most libraries will offer support to any member of staff within their area/ board. As these services are at board level the support they offer differs but they usually will: Local library services | The Knowledge Network Scotland

  • What is easiest way to access knowledge network:

    Online at : https://www.knowledge.scot.nhs.uk/

  • Not directly relevant to appraisals, but the pink spyglass on TrakCare is amazing, as is Dynamed, but most resident doctors don't know about this. Is there anything that NES can do to spread awareness please?

This feedback has been shared with the team and we will look at promotional activities around this. They may be in touch with the inquirer to see what the best channels maybe to highlight these aspects of TKN.

  • As SOAR appraisal and TURAS learn are part of the same system, would it be possible to automatically link the learning history to appraisal documents (rather than saving and uploading) to evidence CPD?

The two setups are not currently linked, but we hope to address this in future developments.

  • Do these learning resources provide verifiable CPD certification? GDC require a minimum of verifiable hours annually and so it unfortunate to attend a course but for this not to be recognised.

A range of learning resources are available through the NES Dental CPD area on Turas Learn, which provide verifiable CPD with GDC-compliant verification. Other resources on Turas Learn provide valuable learning on key topics but do not necessarily provide the certification details which are needed to ensure compliance with GDC requirements.

For example, BMJ Best Practice does offer limited accreditation.

Some examples of Turas Learn resources:

  • Human Factors Hub: https://learn.nes.nhs.scot/21394
