Since Medical Revalidation was launched in December 2012, NES has developed SOAR to accommodate Appraisal and Revalidation recommendations for all doctors working in NHS Scotland, in Primary and Secondary Care, including resident doctors.
It has been agreed at a national level that Revalidation recommendations in Scotland will be made by Responsible Officers (ROs). For doctors in training in Scotland, the RO is the Medical Director of NES.
Resident doctors in training are asked to complete the Health, Probity, Complaints & Critical Incidents, and Work History declarations on SOAR; which is then reviewed and signed off by their Educational Supervisors ahead of their review meeting.
This allows the RO and their named and agreed proxies (e.g. Postgraduate Deans, Assistant Directors etc) to access your ARCP details (imported from Turas) and declarations, as well as making the Revalidation recommendations from within the same system.
If you have already qualified in one specialty and working as such in the boards (and appraised there) but retraining in another, you are expected the continue with your annual medical appraisal arrangements with your employer - the additional ask is for you to forward a copy of your Form 4 (or grant permission if using SOAR) via the below form:
The reason for this is because even though you are working and appraised elsewhere, NES is still your Responsible Officer for revalidation purposes and as such need to review your Form 4s in order to make the necessary recommendations.
All other ARCP processes remain as is for the training programme you are in.
Please find below PowerPoint slideshows that illustrate how various Trainee users navigate through SOAR.
