The 2026 annual Scottish Medical Appraisers conference was organised to support the development of the appraiser workforce.  The programme for the day was as below:

Welcome and PSDS updates

Opening remarks from Dr Iain Jamieson (Assistant Director, Public Services Delivery Scotland (PSDS)); followed by an update on organisational changes and appraiser training activities from William Liu (Training Manager Medical Appraisal, PSDS)

Fostering Neuro-inclusive Appraisals

This session explored the varied neurodiverse experiences appraisers may encounter during appraisal discussions, offering practical strategies for appraisers to provide meaningful support.

GP Returner and International induction programme

This session explored the different pathways to GP registration and the practical steps required for doctors to be added to their local Performer List via the Returner and International Induction Programme (R&IIP).

Supporting SAS doctors through appraisal

Using real‑world scenarios, this workshop focused on supporting SAS doctors through the appraisal process in a way that is consistent, fair and developmental.

Finding Hope in Appraisal

This interactive session combined small and large group discussions, as well as practical tips, to identify prevalent issues, examine how these difficulties manifest during appraisal, and consider their impact on both appraisees and appraisers.

Discussing Complaints in Medical Appraisal

Drawing on practical examples and shared discussion, this workshop explored how appraisers can approach conversations about complaints with confidence, consistency and compassion.

Medical Appraisal Scotland and AI guidance

Presentation and demonstrations of the Medical Appraisal Scotland website from the PSDS team; which was then followed up with a session considering the published guidance of ethical use of AI in appraisal.

Exploring how we process information presented to us and what might impact our thinking.
