Role of the Responsible Officer

The Responsible Officer (RO) is the individual in each organisation with legal responsibility for the system of revalidation.  In most cases the Responsible Officers are the Executive Medical Directors of NHS Health Boards in Scotland. This process is regulated by the Department of Health in England.

The RO is the person who makes Revalidation recommendations to the GMC.  For most doctors, it is the Medical Director in the Health Board they work in.  For Trainees, it is the Medical Director of NHS Education for Scotland (NES).
