Improving Appraisal Conversations: Egan Skilled Helper Model

Improving Appraisal Conversations: Egan Skilled Helper Model

This workshop is part of the NES Refresher programme of activities and offered to experienced appraisers who have completed formal medical appraiser training and appraising for at least a year.

This half-day introductory workshop presents an effective and widely used model of mentoring/coaching in the workplace. The format includes a presentation of the Egan skilled helper model with opportunities for discussion of its relevance in appraisal, and the opportunity to practice mentoring skills in small groups with a trained facilitator.

This training, which includes practice sessions, aims to give appraisers an introduction to the Egan Skilled Helper model.  By the end of the workshop, the participants should have some familiarity with this model of mentoring and have gained confidence in using the required skills in an appraisal setting.

This is an interactive, experiential training day; and the expectation is that you will be in a private, confidential space without interruptions, and without needing to attend to emerging work situations.

For your own learning experience as well as your fellow appraisers, please consider another training date if you are unable to commit to this half-day, delivered virtually via MS Teams.

It is not our intention to turn appraisers into coaches or mentors, but rather to explore the use of coaching and mentoring skills in appraisal conversations – which has proven to be very popular topics for appraisers.  Information can be provided re further training opportunities for those who wish to take it further.
